Have taken many Pope and Young as well as Boone and Crocket over the years. This is a perfect hunt for someone just beginning their hunting journey or for the most experienced hunter looking to target a big, mature black bear.
We run out of a remote canvas wall tent camp with amenities like Starlink internet, instant hot water shower, some of the other modern luxuries.
We have a high population of mature bears with about 30% color phase. Hunts are done over bait sites. We run a high number of bait sites in order to cover a large area and keep our population strong.
We only hunt the afternoon until dark due to activity being higher during that time as well as the long daylight hours make for very long days.
Great hunt for bowhunters as we can get close to the bears. Hunts are done from naturally built ground blinds. Travel is done by vehicle and ATV. You can expect to see numerous bears throughout the course of the hunt. Beautiful time of year in northern Alberta as the harsh winter has subsided and the green landscape is starting to blossom.
BEAR HUNTING FAQ
What type of caliber rifle should I bring? We like to see clients with a .30 caliber rifle or larger. Due to the size of the animals in our area, this would be our recommendation. Although, the decision is up to the hunter as comfortability is just as important as power.
Where is the closest airport to the bear hunting lodge? Edmonton international airport (YEG).
Do I need to fill anything out to bear hunt in Alberta? You can apply online for the Alberta "Wildlife identification number" WIN, which is required for purchasing a license in Alberta.
Do we offer lodging? Yes we offer bear hunts with lodging. The lodge is a brand new facility located in just west of Slave lake, Alberta. That is where home base is and based on the hunt, we may be hunting close to there or in our remote areas.
What percentage of bears you take are color phase? A season average would be around 30-35%. Some weeks may be up to 50% while others may not have any. However, we do have a very strong population of color phase in our area.
What do you look for in a shooter bear? There are a few things that will show if it’s a mature boar or not. However, being as they don’t have a set of antlers to let you know the sex, they can be difficult to judge. Our experienced guides will let you know the characteristics to look for in a mature boar.
What is the ideal weapon for black bears? We take roughly a 50/50 split of rifle to archery hunters. Our bear hunts are a great archery hunt as you can get close enough to them while having time to wait for the proper shot. The margin for error is tighter with the bow but it makes for an exciting hunt being within 30 yards of a big black bear. As for rifle caliber, it all comes down to comfortability. Any 30 caliber or equivalent will be sufficient.
Can I sit with my son/daughter? Absolutely! We love having families in camp and find our black bear hunts are a perfect hunt for families to have an unforgettable experience together.
